US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, at a  press conference on 15th June in Maputo has announced US funding of about 14 million dollars a year, over the next decade, for rebuilding the districts hit by terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado of Mozambique.

Ms Nuland explained that apart from the reconstruction of Cabo Delgado and the rest of the country, the fund will be used to train young people to make them employable, and thus discouraging them from being recruited by the terrorists.

Mozambique and the US are expected to sign a cooperation agreement covering these funds within the next two months. The fund has already been approved by the United States Congress. To help Mozambique tide over the food insecurity, particularly in Cabo Delgado, US will also disburse a further 40 million dollars. Additionally, ten million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be given to vaccinate Mozambican adolescents aged between 11 and 17. Mozambique is yet to start the vaccination to people under the age of 18.
