Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, deplored the heavy impact of the sanctions on the population and said that it would not be confined to Mali alone but the entire region. In a significant move, ECOWAS has postponed its decision on the proposed transition period in Mali until 3 July allowing the economic sanctions to continue.

At the recently held meeting of ECOWAS, it appears that a large majority of the delegations of heads of state present at the summit noted the negative impact of these sanctions on the population. They endorsed the view that sanctions should be lifted to strengthen the transition process in Mali. ECOWAS is calling for a transition period of 16 to 18 months, as opposed to the 24 months proposed by the Malian authorities.

The Malian foreign minister said at the summit that the National Transitional Council was seized with the matter. This draft electoral law also includes the issue of a single election management body. The writing of a new Constitution and the rest of the requirements are complied with. The foreign minister added that despite the sanctions, the government was getting support from the population. He praised the resilience of the citizens despite the hardships they were facing because of the sanctions. In his speech, he exuded the optimism that the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS would finally be withdrawn at the earliest.
