Libya loses thousands of tonnes of oil due to a broken pipeline

• Libyan Authorities have reported that a damaged pipeline linking the Sarir oil field to the terminal in the port of Tobruk has caused the serious leak. The broken pipeline  is releasing thousands of barrels of oil into the desert every day since June 1st

Libya’s struggling oil sector has received another blow. The political impasse in the country has already crippled Libya’s oil sector. Over and above this, Libyan Authorities have reported that a damaged pipeline linking the Sarir oil field to the terminal in the port of Tobruk has caused a serious leak. The broken pipeline is releasing thousands of barrels of oil into the desert every day since June 1st.

According to the estimates of the Arabian Gulf Oil Company, an affiliate of the state-run National Oil Corporation- the operator of the pipeline, some 22,000 barrels a day are being lost from the leak. Attempts are on to plug the leak, it added. Lack of maintenance due to budgetary delay was cited as the primary cause of the damage.

Since 2011, and the ouster of its leader  Moammar Gadhafi the country has been divided between rival governments, and many of the country’s oil fields and facilities have been forced to close.
