Amidst the rising tension between Rwanda and DR Congo, the Chairperson of the Africa Union, Senegal President Macky Sall, on  May 29, called for dialogue between the two neighbors. The rising conflicts between the DR Congo army (FARDC) and M23 rebels near the common border of Rwanda and DRC is threatening to impact Rwanda, dragging it also into the conflict.

Recently cross-border shelling was reported on Rwandan territory. Several people on the Rwandan border were injured on May 23, due to the rocket shelling launched from the Congolese side of the border. According to Rwandan media reports, the Congolese army and the terrorist FDLR militia also kidnapped two Rwandan soldiers who were patrolling along the common border.

AU chairperson called for calm and dialogue between the two countries and for the peaceful resolution of the crisis with due support from regional mechanisms and of the African Union. At the extraordinary Summit last week on countering terrorism and unconstitutional change of government in Africa, Dr. Vincent Biruta, Rwanda’s Minister, appealed to DR Congo to observe good neighborliness. In Malabo, Dr. Biruta stressed that for close to 30 years now, there has been a consistent collaboration between the FARDC and the Rwandan FDLR armed group based in eastern DRCongo.
