Egypt’s plans to promote SMEs

According to the 2017 Census, there are 3.8 million micro-enterprises and 67,600 small enterprises in Egypt. Of late, the government has been focusing on the SME sector and creating an ecosystem for the companies in the segment to grow. Yet, they face numerous challenges in getting adequate capital, market access, etc.

Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Governor Tarek Amer said the small and medium-sized enterprises represent the mainstay of economic growth in both developed and developing countries. He was addressing a conference organized by the Arab Banks Union recently.

The conference – under the theme of the future of small and medium enterprises was held in Luxor. Small businesses in Egypt play a key role in realizing economic and social development, particularly in catering to the domestic market for goods and services.
