The Libyan Constitutional Committee, composed of members of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, recently concluded its meeting, sponsored by the UN in Cairo.
In statements issued, Stephanie Williams, the UN Advisor on Libya described the week long consultations as “conciliatory”. The meeting also discussed a number of issues pertaining to the committee’s organizing statute. The UN envoy added that the members will resume consultations after the vacation of Eid Al Fitr.
Ms Williams expressed confidence to reach a consensus among the two Libyan houses before the end of the current year. Such a development will lead to the much delayed Libyan elections based on a true constitutional base that will restore political and economic stability in Libya.
The UN also facilitated a number of in-camera sessions. A team of technical experts have presented clarifications on a set of constitutional issues based on the constitutional expertise drawn from a number of countries. .
