Encouraged by Africa’s phenomenal growth in the number of internet users on the continent, Google is gearing up to serve the growing base of young internet users of Africa. The American technology leader had announced a1 billion dollars investment plan in various projects in Africa over the next five years.  The announcement was made by the CEO Sundar Pichai in last October, to help African economies accelerate their digital transformation.

According to experts, Africa will host 800 million Internet users, mostly youth, by the end of this decade. As part of its Africa expansion strategy, Google has announced its decision to invest in its first ever Africa product development centre in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. The centre will meet the growing demand of internet users on the continent. The Centre will also provide hundreds of job opportunities for engineers, product managers, designers and researchers.

Of late, Africa has been attracting investment in the sector from technology giants. Google has already opened an artificial intelligence center in Accra, Ghana, focusing on innovations. Microsoft has also invested in technology development hubs in Kenya and Nigeria, investing $100 million creating jobs for hundreds of engineers in both countries.
