- According to results published by The Gambia’s independent electoral commission on April 10th, Gambian President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party has won the legislative election, but failed to secure the majority needed to govern the country alone.
According to results published by The Gambia’s independent electoral commission on April 10th, Gambian President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party has won the legislative election, but failed to secure the majority needed to govern the country alone. National People’s Party won 19 of the 53 contested parliamentary seats beating the main opposition United Democratic Party’s (UDP). The UDP won 15 seats and independents claimed 11 seats.
Barrow came back to power for a second term in office after securing 53 percent of the vote in a presidential election late last year. The local media has reported low turnout of the voters at the legislative elections unlike the December 2021 poll.
The new parliament is due to be sworn in on 14 April. Barrow faces several other challenges such as high inflation, corruption, economic backwardness etc. in September 2020 the outgoing parliament rejected a draft constitution limiting the president to two terms.
