French Minister of Economy, Finance and Recovery Bruno Le Maire has been on a two-day visit to Egypt to discuss the bilateral relations and the repercussions of the Ukrainian-Russian war.

The visit will be an opportunity to strengthen the Franco-Egyptian industrial relationship in various projects apart from taking care of each other’s challenges and requirements in the wake of the Ukraine-Russia war. It appears that most of the sub-Saharan African countries are supporting Russia in the war. The West and the US are tapping the support of North African countries like Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria.

Analysts point out that it could be a win-win situation for both regions. The North African countries are dependent on Russia and Ukraine for import of their wheat and sunflower oil to meet their domestic requirements. The war has disrupted the supply of these goods. West Europe and the US could be alternative sources for importing these goods.

In turn, the Western countries can import their fossil fuel and gas requirements from countries like Algeria, Libya etc to make good the disruptions caused in the import of these goods from Russia. That way, the western bloc can exert pressure on Russia through sanctions.

A number of meetings are lined up during the two days including between the French minister and President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.
