Great changes are taking place in the telecom landscape of Ethiopia. Safaricom Ethiopia and the state owned Ethio Telecom have started negotiating a network sharing deal. It may be recalled that Safaricom Ethiopia has been granted license through an auction to operate in the east African country to induce a measure of competition to the state-owned Ethio Telecom. Safaricom Ethiopia is slated to start operations this month.

According to sources in Ethio telecom and Safaricom, details of the partnership are being worked out under the close watch of the regulator – Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA). The main issue is about negotiating on national roaming and infrastructure sharing in line with the telecom proclamation and regulation framework oversighted by the ECA.

Both the companies are committed to deepen the digital coverage of the country sharing Safaricom’s pan continent expertise and the state -owned company, Ethio Telecom’s reach and penetration. Analysts maintain that it could lead to a win-win partnership, apart from creating a huge digital infrastructure for the country. According to the deal worked out earlier, Safaricom Ethiopia is expected to invest US $8 billion on critical infrastructure and services in Ethiopia over the next decade or so
