The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has launched Africa’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) research center in Brazzaville Congo. The African Research Centre funded through the ECA and other partners, will provide technology education and skills to strengthen Africa’s integration. The Centre was launched by UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the ECA, Vera Songwe, and Anatole Collinet Makossa, Prime Minister of Congo representing the President Denis Sassou Nguesso.
The AI center with focus on technology and innovation will promote research through artificial intelligence to promote digital technology in Africa including digital policy, infrastructure, finance, skills, digital platforms and entrepreneurship. The Centre, the first of its kind in Africa, will act as a regional hub for the development of emerging technologies in the region. According to a statement issued by ECA, It is also expected to achieve economic inclusion of Africa by generating jobs, bridging the digital gap, and eradicating poverty for the continent’s socio-economic development.
The other partners in the initiative are The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UNESCO, the International Telecommunications Union, Alibaba Jack Ma Foundation and other key ECA partners. The AI Centre ensures Africa’s participation in the global value chain in line with the Agenda 2063’s master plan for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse.
