With elections round the corner, creeping inflation might become a major concern for the government. The responsibility for the increased prices has been cast in the government and blamed that it (government) failed to curb the ever-rising prices. The government sources, it is reported, apprehend that inflation would become an election issue. The major reasons for the inflation, economists point out, would be higher taxes and increased costs of production, including that of farm inputs.
The year-on-year food inflation rose by 8.89% in January, according to the Kenyan statistics bureau’s latest data. The FAO maintains that global food prices have been rising since January this year. It has told nations to switch over to more prudential norms for upping agricultural production to address the growing food deficit.
