A military statement issued on February 5th   has revealed that several people were killed in clashes between military forces and armed groups at the facilities of former international peace-keeping mission in Sudan’s Darfur region. The number of causalities are not known yet.

There have been reports of violence and displacement in Darfur since 2020.Political analysts have attributed the unrest to power struggle between factions after a peace deal was signed with some former rebel groups. It further surged after the United Nations peace-keeping mission UNAMID ceased operations at the start of 2021.

Sudan’s military leaders had directed the groups that signed the deal to leave cities in Darfur after looting and attacks led to the temporary suspension of U.N.’s World Food Programme operations in the region. Almost 2.5 million people live in displacement camps in Darfur.

As per initial plan, the UNAMID peace-keepers were to be replaced by a national joint force. However, the national force is yet to be deployed. Former UNAMID facilities have been repeatedly attacked and looted.
