The African Union has finally suspended Burkina Faso from all its activities as a sequel to the January 24 Coup that ousted President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

In a twitter post on Monday, the Peace and Security Council of AU decided to suspend the participation of Burkina Faso in all activities of the organization until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country. Moussa Faki Mahamat, chair of the African Union Commission earlier condemned the coup.

ECOWAS suspended the West African country first. A delegation of ECOWAS heads of diplomacy on Monday arrived in the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, for talks with members of the junta.

Like Mali and Niger its close neighbours, Burkina Faso is in the grip of a spiralling violence since 2015. This is attributed to jihadist movements affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group. The violence has left at least 2,000 dead and 1.4 million displaced.

Since 2019, attacks by mobile combat units targeted mostly rural zones in the north and east of the country, have led to displacements and intercommunal violence. Islamist militants now move freely across entire stretch of the country and have forced inhabitants of the regions to conform to a strict version of Islamic law. Meanwhile, the army is continuing to fight against the Islamists. The violence has depleted the country’s already meagre resources.
