Intense rains in Southern Africa have considerably affected the civic life in the region , after its landfall in Madagascar on last Monday. Reports indicate that over 48 people have been killed by flooding. It also led to displacement of an estimated 130,000 people.

After the respite of the strong winds and incessant rains, reports indicate that people are returning home. About 20,000 people have already returned as water began to recede. More are expected to do so in the coming days. Apart from Madagascar, where it began, the other countries which are affected are Mozambique and Malawi causing extensive damages.

AID organizations are wary about the health hazards that may befall the region. Also, the affected people who moved to safer places mostly belonged to the vulnerable section. They had suffered huge losses in terms of damages to their houses, properties and loss of agricultural produce, which were damaged due to water logging.
