ZANZIBAR and Germany renew cooperation after a decade

· After a decade of disengagement, ZANZIBAR, and Germany have resumed their bilateral cooperation.Both the countries have officially renewed their development cooperation.

· Germany has a long history of supporting social and economic development projects in Zanzibar since 1965.

· However, Germany stalled its collaborations with Zanzibar in 2015 in disagreement with the then political situation in the islands .

After a decade of disengagement, ZANZIBAR and Germany have resumed their bilateral cooperation Both the countries have officially renewed their development cooperation. Germany has a long history of supporting social and economic development projects in Zanzibar since 1965. However, Germany stalled its collaborations with Zanzibar in 2015 in disagreement with the then political situation in the islands .

President Hussein Mwinyi, speaking at the State House-hosted ceremony, remarked that Germany was a key development stakeholder in Zanzibar . He said that the reengagement with Germany was a positive development that will stimulate social and economic development in the isles. He pointed out that various projects, such as Kikwajuni residential houses–famously known as German houses; Bambi development houses; and development of Stone Town as successful examples of Unguja-Berlin cooperation. President Mwinyi added that Germany proposes to support Zanzibar in sectors like water, health sports and the blues economy.

Germany has expressed interest in supporting Zanzibar in its ambitious universal health insurance programme. The support will include reform of the health system and introduction of the first workshop to develop a road map scheduled to take place in Zanzibar next month. In the water sector, Germany has made a commitment of 660,000 Euros for feasibility and environmental studies focusing on water security. The study will identify and recommend measures to handle the challenges of climate change.

Speaking at the event, German Ambassador to Tanzania Regine Hess pledged the support of German government for the execution of all the promised development projects.
