The former governor of Lagos state and National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress,(APC) Aswanju Bola Tinubu has announced his plan to contest the upcoming 2023 elections for the office of the president. The declaration came after his closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja. If he wins the party primaries, he can be a potential frontrunner to succeed Mr. Buhari in May next year. It is still not known whether current  President Buhari would contest the elections. There are some speculations that Buhari may contest the forthcoming elections, though, according to the constitution, he has to demit the office, having served two terms.

There have been speculations about Tinubu’s possible contest for months. He was actively involved in the merger of opposition parties that displaced the People’s Democratic Party in 2015. Mr. Tinubu, 69,  told the local media that it has been his “age-long ambition to lead the country one day” and believes that the elections in  2023 offered that opportunity. Nigerians have received the news with mixed reactions some raising questions about the state of his health and allegations of corruption. Tinubu however, denies all these charges and maintains that he is well qualified to contest the elections.
