The military junta in Guinea would keep its borders open with Mali going against ECOWAS and would defy sanctions against the neighbouring  country.  Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, the leader of the military junta  has decided against the ECOWAS group’s decision  to freeze Malian assets at the region’s central bank. Also, the regional body has ordered land borders be closed, amongst other sanctions.

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) of Guinea reaffirmed that the air, land and sea borders sharing with Mali  would remain open to all sister nations in accordance with its pan-Africanist vision. Guinea’s decision is an exception.  The country was suspended from the 15-member regional bloc, as a sequel to the  military coup of last September.

The Malian authorities  said that  they remained open to dialogue with ECOWAS. But the regional group insisted elections be held in February.   The military regime argued that it could not adhere to the timetable for election because of the rampant insecurity from the brutal jihadist insurgency that started in 2012. The atrocities are now spreading to  other Sahel  countries like  to Burkina Faso and Niger. Reports from Mali indicate that there is no consensus on the issue among the citizens. There is a group of people, who defend the postponement of elections, while others are not favouring that.
