Moroccan travel agents protests against closure of borders

Moroccan travel agents demonstrated in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism in Rabat to draw attention of the authorities disastrous situation of the sector, after the country abruptly closing its  borders. It may  be recalled that the government closed the borders  on November 29, over the spread of Omicron variant of Covid. The travel agents said that it had given another jolt to the already affected tourism industry in the country.

Moroccan tour operators said that they faced bankruptcy due to border closure. Close to 200 industry workers demonstrated in front of the tourism ministry in Rabat, demanding the reopening of borders and talks with the authorities. Many tourists from countries like Egypt, Turkey, the Emirates and others had made   reservations in various hotels. With the closure of borders, they all canceled reservations and planned trips to other destinations.

Morocco suspended all passenger flights from November 29. This order will continue  until January 31. The government recently announced  a  US$216 monthly allowance to tourism workers for the final quarter of 2021.
