The company has been under pressure to take on board, local suppliers. KFC operates locally through franchisee Kuku Foods East Africa. The firm’s chief executive for East Africa Jacques Theunissen said that although KFC currently imports its French fries, it is open to the idea of sourcing the potatoes for its chips and French fries from the local suppliers who meet the global KFC quality and safety specifications in the near future.
The National Potato Council of Kenya CEO Wachira Kaguongo has suggested that KFC should consider creating synergies with local suppliers and introduce the verities they want in Kenya so that farmers can buy them and grow for onward supply. The council has been lobbying for local sourcing of potatoes. Observers feel that KFC with its presence in the country for more than 10 years could have selected local farmers or support value chains to meet its standards like the case with other multinationals.
