Other buildings in the complex were also damaged by the fire. It started early in the morning and soon spread from the old Parliament building to the National Assembly building.
The majestic Parliament complex has been an important icon of South Africa, which can hark back a history of more than 130 years. Those buildings carried the memories of colonialism, apartheid and the country’s transition to democracy under Nelson Mandela.
A man was arrested on Sunday. He is being questioned in connection with the fire. The police will present him before the court and are expected to face charges. The local media had reported that the man had to be rescued from the fire. There was no causality in the incident since Parliament was not in session.
