Shippers concerned over the scarcity of empty containers

In an interview with the Press, Jonathan Nicol, president of the Shippers Association of Lagos (SAL) has expressed concern over the scarcity of empty containers for bringing cargoes into the country. He reported that cargoes are stuck in China causing concern for industries and lamented the malfunctioning of “The Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR) system of Customs, an advisory document that has credibility.

He urged the Nigerian government to look into maritime problems and resolve the issues without further delay.

He said if the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and agencies like the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has the capacity to generate huge revenues. He complained that shippers have to make hefty payments which have further doubled now. The slow pace of construction work is also he said was a major challenge for shippers. The goods fall off trucks due to the poor condition of roads leading to heavy losses for shippers because their goods are not guaranteed.
