President of Comoros Azali Assoumani issued a decree recently making vaccination mandatory for every citizen. This will trigger a massive vaccination campaign. The drive is to give double jabs to 60% of the population by the end of this year.
During the campaign in the archipelago, vaccination centers have been ordered to open from 7 AM to 7 PM. A mandatory vaccination pass, aiming to limit the spread of the virus is also in force. The citizens will have to produce these certificates to gain access to businesses, public transportation, supermarkets, institutions etc. The police have started to conduct random checks to identify people violating these norms.
The move is the result of a surge in the numbers of infected people. Last week, 303 people were infected as compared to 83 cases a week before. The country also reported 152 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The total population in the archipelago lying off the eastern coast in the Indian Ocean is less than 10 million.
