African Union (AU)-European Union (EU) Summit slated for February 2022

·      Preparations are on for the sixth African Union (AU)-European Union (EU) Summit scheduled for17th and 18th February 2022 in Brussels, Belgium.

·      A preparatory meeting, between AU and EU was held in Belgium on Dec 19-20.

·      The Au delegation consisted of AU Chairperson, President Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi, Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, Chairperson of AU commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, and other officials. The president of the European Council, Charles Miche led the EU team.

The Summit is expected to give a boost to the partnership between the two regions. It is expected to provide a framework for tackling structural challenges between Africa and Europe in sectors including economic and trade cooperation, green transformation, digitalization, peace and security, governance and migration. Recently, the second edition of the AU-EU ministerial meeting was held in Kigali In October this year where 68 foreign ministers met and discussed ways of strengthening Africa and European partnerships. The meeting discussed the impact of COVID 19 and ways to mitigate the economic stress, construction of vaccine manufacturing plant in mid-2022, global actions on climate change, call for peace, among others.
