The oil-rich Libya was hoping to hold the Dec. 24 crucial presidential elections to elect a central leader and gradually move away from the decade-old political instability. After a NATO-led uprising ousted former leader Muammar Gadhafi in 2011, the country has been rudderless. However, Libya’s scheduled Dec. 24 elections have been called off by a militia group that seized power in the Libyan capital Tripoli.
According to reports that cited local TV Al Ghad, forces belonging to Al-Samud brigade have taken control of the headquarters of the ministry of defence and the Presidential Council (PC), Tunisie Numerique. The statement by Abdel Basset Marwan, head of the brigade said that Presidential elections will not be held in Libya and that all state institutions in Tripoli are being closed. PC President Mohamed Younis Ahmed Al-Menfi and other members of the council have been arrested as per reports.
Over 50 candidate had submitted their candidacies for the election.
