Coup leader orders release of four civilian ministers of Sudan

·       Amidst international pressure to resolve the crisis and re-install the civilian transitional government, four civilian ministers who were detained during the military coup led by army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have been released.

·       They are  Hashem Hassab Alrasoul, telecommunications minister; Ali Geddo, trade minister; Hamza Baloul, information.

·       UN head Antonio Guterres in a phone call to Burhan had urged the coup leader to resolve the political crisis and restore the constitutional order and Sudan’s transitional process.

 

Amidst international pressure to resolve the crisis and re-install the civilian transitional government, four civilian ministers who were detained during the military coup led by army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have

been released. They are  Hashem Hassab Alrasoul, telecommunications minister; Ali Geddo, trade minister; Hamza Baloul, information. UN head Antonio Guterres in a phone call to Burhan had urged the coup leader to resolve the political crisis and restore the constitutional order and Sudan’s transitional process.

 

According to a state news agency, Burhan has conveyed that he is committed to maintaining the peace in the country and will complete the transition process to an elected civilian government in a manner that preserves the security of the country.U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke with Burhan. He also urged Burhan to immediately restore the civilian-led government and  release all political figures detained since the coup.

The military coup led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan happened on October 25, at a time when Sudan was gradually progressing towards democracy. Burhan dissolved the transitional government and detained other government officials and political leaders in a coup. State news television headquarters were raided,  and mobile and internet communications cut off across the country. Since then the country has been in turmoil.
