The ten-year plan to modernize its transport infrastructure is expected to transform Egypt into one of major global hubs for transport and logistics by 2024, according to the Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir.

Speaking to the media, he said that the 10-year plan from 2014 to 2024, at an estimated cost of EGP 1.669 trillion (about $106.3bn) was drawn up to modernize the transport and communication sectors. These covered six main areas, such as the roads and bridges, at a cost of EGP 474bn, railways, EGP 225bn, tunnels and electric traction, EGP 837bn, maritime transport, EGP 115bn, dry ports and logistics, EGP 15 billion, and river transport, EGP 3bn.

A number of large projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Projects such as the light rail train will be finalized by the end of 2022. He added that projects such as the monorail, the high-speed electric train, around 30,000 km of new and developed roads and port projects will be completed by the end of 2024. The minister disclosed that there are also plans to connect Egypt with other North African countries, to Libya, Chad and Niger by road. Cairo-Cape Town axis connecting North Africa with South Africa, a river transport route reaching Lake Victoria is also proposed. The minister invited Egyptian and foreign investors to participate in the projects covering various fields.
