The global death toll from COVID-19 pandemic crossed 5 million as on last Monday. This unprecedented crisis had struck both developed and poorer countries. But many feel that the death toll has been under reported from many countries either due to lack of proper reporting or due to absence of any organized structure to monitor such eventualities.

The United States, the European Union, Britain and Brazil account for one-eighth of the world’s population.   Half of all reported deaths are from these countries. For instance, the U.S. alone has recorded over 745,000 lives lost. This is more than  the reported deaths in any other nation. While the pandemic is refusing to fully bottomed out, many health specialists warn that the nations should come forward to avoid a repeat of the pandemic by all means.

The data compiled by Johns Hopkins University is revealing. It says that the death toll equals the combined populations of the US cities Los Angeles and San Francisco. It also aggregates to the death toll of people killed in various battles and skirmishes among nations since 1950, according to the statistics compiled by the Peace Research Institute Oslo. Covid is the third largest killer globally   after heart disease and stroke. In certain parts of the world, such as Russia, Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe, the number of vaccinations are relatively small due to rumours, misinformation and distrust in government organizations conducting vaccinations.   In Ukraine only 17% of the adult population is fully vaccinated; while  in Armenia, it is still lower  at  7%.

India, despite its terrifying delta surge that peaked in early May, now has a much lower reported daily death rate than wealthier Russia, the U.S. or Britain indicating  a disconnect between wealth and health. Poorer neighbourhoods of rich countries are hit hardest due to the pandemic. For instance, in the U.S.  COVID-19 has taken an outsize toll on Black and Hispanic people.
