  • Mining is an important activity in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the same time, security risks are a matter of great concern
  • Accidents and landslides are reported in large numbers, stealing precious lives
  • To overcome these recurring accidents, a local entrepreneur created an App that allows mine managers to follow the movements of those working in the pit
  • The App is connected with the belt of the worker

The app sends signals to the surface monitoring team, which would help quick rescue operations to save the workers caught in the accidents or similar incidents. The system integrates GPS tracking technology. The device also can measure other variables such as temperature and oxygen levels. The variation of the temperature underground can be tracked by the mine manager.   The parts having the highest variation in temperature can be spotted easily.  This would enable the manager  to send oxygen to rescue people underground caught in that portion of the mine. The App is developed by Victoire Shunguru, a local entrepreneur.

Although accidents in mines are frequent in the country, security is often not a priority, leading to disastrous consequences.  Miners feel that system offers new hope in dealing with a problem that has claimed thousands of lives.
