Aspen, the global specialty and branded multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Durban, South Africa has launched an anaesthetics production line to beef up its Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 production. The facility is located at its Gqeberha-based manufacturing site. The plan of the company is to convert Aspen’s Gqeberha facility into one of the largest manufacturing hubs for general anaesthetic products in the world.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Department of Trade Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel, said that the facility will transform the Eastern Cape as the most significant advanced pharmaceutical hub on the African continent creating local jobs.

South Africa has been largely importing general anesthetics and the new production line is expected to provide the product for the local market as also for exports. The investment of more than R3 billion in this facility is envisaged as the single largest investment in the pharmaceutical industry in the country.
