In an interaction with media, US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland has reiterated the continued US commitment to support Libya to achieve national reconciliation, reunite the Libyan institutions and hold the general elections. He also acknowledged the progress Libya has achieved over the past year in the political process.
Through his tweet on the US Embassy account, Norland revealed that he met with the HNEC head and noted the keenness of Libyans to vote and restore stability and prosperity to the country. In an earlier statement, Norland, said that the main goal for Washington in Libya is to help to hold free and fair elections. .He assured the American support to Libyan authorities to regain its sovereignty and remove all foreign forces and mercenaries. Norland pointed out that the interim government of Libya, the Government of National Unity had its primary task to lead the country to the December 24 elections and stressed that the no-confidence vote by the House of Representatives will not affect the government’s tasks. The US had put forward two-stage elections proposal – that Libyans alone can decide the structure of elections and political future whether in one or two rounds.
