The contract was signed between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the Saudi firm to this effect. The contracts also included agreements with three consortiums of international and local companies to implement the project.
The contracts were signed by Khaled bin Hamad Al-Qunun, CEO of the Saudi Electricity Company, from the Saudi side, and from the Egyptian side, Sabah Mohamed Mashali, chairperson and managing director of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
The project at an estimated cost of $1.8 billion includes the construction of three high-voltage substations, the East Madinah Station, the Tabuk Station in the Kingdom, and the Badr Station in East Cairo. These will be connected by overhead transmission lines and marine cables in the Gulf of Aqaba. Saudi Arabia with its large electrical network in the region aims to become a regional center for the exchange of electrical energy through electrical interconnection projects.
For his part, Mohamed Shaker, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, spoke about the deepening ties between the two countries and the ambition to expand renewable energy sources.The project is expected to deliver several benefits to both the two countries. These include enhancing the reliability and stability of the national electrical networks, optimising the generation capacities and enabling the two countries to achieve the ambitious goals of expanding renewable energy sources within the optimal mix of electricity production.
