A special rapporteur from the United Nations (UN) will be sent to Zimbabwe to assess the impact of Western sanctions in the country. The assessment is being done in response to a request by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Accordingly, Ms Alena Douhan, the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of the unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, is set to make an official visit to Zimbabwe from October 18 to 28.The visit coincides with the commemoration of the Anti-Sanctions Day by the SADC region. In a statement, UN said that Ms Alena Douhan, will gather first-hand information on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the human rights in a specific country. Based on this assessment and evaluation of such impacts will be undertaken to formulate recommendations and guidelines on how to mitigate these adverse impacts.

The UN statement added that the objective of the mission was to examine, how far unilateral sanctions impeded the optimum realization of the rights set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments, in particular the right of individuals and peoples to development. The conclusions and recommendations of the Special Rapporteur will be submitted to the Human Rights Council in September 2022.

Zimbabwe has been striving hard to lift the sanctions as it cites they are stifling progress on its plans to economically empower the people of Zimbabwe.
