International media was flooded on Sunday Sep 5th with reports of a  military coup in Guinea. The attempted coup was reported from the capital city of Guinea, Conakry.  Guinea’s President Alpha Condé was re-elected for a controversial third term in office amid violent protests last year.

An unverified video showed him in the hands of soldiers, who said they had staged a coup. They also claimed that all land and air borders have been closed and the government dissolved. Heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the capital was also reported. However, according to some other reports, the defense minister has stated that the attempts had been thwarted. It was also reported that the only bridge connecting the mainland to the Kaloum peninsular, where most of the ministries and the presidential palace, are located has been sealed off with heavy patrolling.

The takeover of the country was announced by the head of Guinea’s special forces, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya,  on state television. He also sought the support of the military to back the coup that aims at dealing with the  corruption in Guinea under President Alpha Conde,

Later, a statement by AU chairman and Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi and AU Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat confirmed the reports. He called for an urgent meeting of the Peace and Security Council to urgently review the situation and take necessary measures.

Guinea is a global leader in the supply of bauxite. It is the second-largest supplier of Bauxite to China. As per the government data, the country exported 82.4 million tons of the mineral globally last year. Political observers are predicting that the military takeover may create a speculative impact on the price of aluminium .
