Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ramdane Lamamra has announced his government’s decision to cut diplomatic relations with Morocco at a news conference. The two neighbouring countries have had strained relations for decades, mainly over the issue of Western Sahara.
The latest provocation reportedly is the deadly wildfires in Algeria which broke out on August 9 amidst a severe heatwave that burned to ashes thousands of hectares of forest, houses and killed more than a hundred people including soldiers. Algeria accused that these lethal wildfires were the work of terrorist groups and was backed by Morocco. The Minister alleged that Morocco unleashed “hostile actions” against Algeria.
The cutting of diplomatic relations is effective from 24th August but consulates in each country will remain open, Lamamra added.
