Ugandan Refugee Minister Esther Anyakun has told BBC that in response to a request from the US government; Uganda has agreed to take in 2,000 refugees who have fled Afghanistan after Taliban militants took over the country. The first group of 500 Afghan refugees are expected to arrive at Entebbe Airport later on August 17. After undertaking the COVID tests, the new Afghan arrivals will be sent to isolation centres. The US is to cover these costs.  Uganda will be hosting them for three months until the US resettles them somewhere else, according to the ministry.

Uganda has been hosting the largest number of refugees in Africa and the third largest in the world. It is currently home to around 1.3 million refugees who have fled conflict or other disasters. Most of them are from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Refugees are allowed to live in settlements or villages alongside local residents.
