After many deliberations stretched over years, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has waived the mandatory seven per cent surcharge that airlines have been paying for import of parts and thereof. The Ministry of Aviation of the West African country has been demanding the waiver for a long time. However, the Ministry of Finance and NCS had continued to impose the charges on operators.
With this decision, payment of duties and VAT on imported aircraft and aircraft spares by the Customs Service are waived. .There was a seven per cent surcharge on the assessed duties. This caused delays in the clearance of aircraft and aircraft spares leading to the grounding of aircraft.
After the Senate meeting, the airlines contacted the Minister of Finance and Minister of Aviation for the immediate waiver of the duty, which they complied with, without any loss of time.
