The health care sector of Côte d’Ivoire is poised to benefit from a $300 million grant by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The agreement in this regard was signed between IFC and the Ivorian government last week.
IFC’s Africa Medical Equipment Facility (AMEF) will disburse the funds which will be used to support the development of private players in the Ivorian medical sector. The focus will be financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the field. The plan enables Ivorian private companies that operate in the healthcare sector to procure equipment from the American company General Electric and the Dutch company Philips at low cost with easier access to spare parts.
Ivorian Prime Minister Patrick Achi stated that his government’s ambition is to make the country a true medical hub in West Africa, through the support of the private sector.
In 2019, the authorities announced a $2.9 billion plan for investments in the health sector over the period 2020-2024. The seven areas included in the program were community health, quality of primary health care, human resources, health information systems, supply chain, private sector integration, and key health financing reforms.
