The 2023 presidential elections of Nigeria are already fanning controversies. The South has already laid claim to the 2023 President.The South is getting increasing backing for their seemingly legitimate claim for the nation’s top office. Six northern governors have already announced their support to the South. The country has 36 governors of which 18 are from the North.
Last week after a meeting under the aegis of Southern Governors’ Forum in Lagos, the Southern governors issued a communiqué, which stated that the next President of Nigeria must emerge from the South. The Forum that consists of both the ruling party at the federal level, All Progressives Congress (APC), and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), unanimously resolved that the presidency of the country must be rotated between southern and northern Nigeria and the next turn for Presidency is for the southern region. The statement was met with sharp opposition from Northern Elders Forum, NEF, which rejected the view of the Southern Governors Forum, stating that the presidency is a democratic and not a rotational position.
