Head of the military junta and president of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, is on a visit to France. It is reported to be a friendship visit to build strong diplomatic relationship.
The 37-year-old Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has been leading a Transitional Military Council (TMC) of 15 generals since the death of his father, Idriss Déby Itno, who ruled the country with an iron fist for 30 years. It is also unofficially reported that the French
President Emmanuel Macron has hosted a dinner in honor of the visiting dignitary. Earlier to visiting France, Mahamat made a trip to Niger and Nigeria.
The head of the transition government has promised “free and transparent” elections after a transition period of 18 months. The African Union (AU) and France demanded that this period should not exceed 18 months. However recently Mahamat Déby hinted that he did not rule out a possible extension of time. Macron was present at the funeral of Idriss Déby’s., He was the only Western head of state to go to N’Djamena to pay tribute to the deceased and to meet his son and successor.
