In Southern Madagascar more than 1.14 million people are in need of food supplies, according to the World Food Programme (WFP). That part of the country is experiencing its worst drought in four decades,
An estimated 14,000 people are already in catastrophic conditions. The crisis situation is likely to double in the coming days affecting 28,000 by October. Analysts say that it was the worst drought in 40 years, in an area where people depend on their own agriculture for livelihood. Droughts happening back to back have created untold miseries to people.
The Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) in children under five in Madagascar has reached an alarming 16.5 percent. In the Ambovombe dsitruict where GAM rates of 27 percent indicate a life-threatening scenario for many children. The new admissions to the severe malnutrition health centers have skyrocketed since June, 2020. Close to US$78.6 million dollars is needed to provide lifesaving food in the next lean season in order to stop a preventable tragedy from unfolding, according to the WFP.
