ICTA, after considerable deliberations, took the decision to allocate 5G spectrums to the island nation’s three major mobile operators, Cellplus, Emtel and Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius (MTML). Each will get 100 MHz frequencies in the 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz bands, with the telecoms asked to specify their preferred allocation and timeframes for achieving various network coverage goals. The decision to allocate spectrum directly and not through an auction process is to drive investment and promote competition between the operators.
By April, the operators were being invited to submit their applications for spectrum to the regulator and now the 5G licenses have been formally granted. The new technology will make possible use of smart homes, Internet of Things, wireless health care, smart cities, driverless vehicles, amongst others. Around the world, 5G is looked upon as a foundation for huge benefits to both governments and businesses willing to optimize on the digital ecosystems. 5G services will be launched by the end of the year.
