The National Coronavirus Response Center (NaCOVERC) announced in a statement that in view of the third wave of COVID 19 infections, Sierra Leone will follow, very strict restrictive measures to curb the spread of the Pandemic with immediate effect. The decision was based on epidemiological data of last month which revealed an “exponential rise” in cases and deaths said NaCOVERC. The western part of the country, including the capital, Freetown, and its surroundings are the worst affected. Sierra Leone was among countries with the least daily cases of the viral disease but began experiencing a rise in cases earlier this month.

The public must adhere to wearing face masks in all public places and transportation, ensure social distancing and wash hands using alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Entry to Worship places such as mosques, churches, and other such establishments will also be restricted. Entertainment centers will close operations for one month and Super spreader events are also banned. The guest list for social gatherings like weddings, funerals, receptions and naming ceremonies, cannot exceed 50.

Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), while noting the third wave in the country called for an acceleration of vaccination coverage. Countries like Sierra Leone is facing the challenges of not only procuring enough Covid-19 vaccines to cover their populations but also to convince people to take the jab. The widespread misconceptions have led to vaccine apathy. To overcome the challenge, starting June 22, government ministries, departments and agencies will only allow employees and members of the public with proof of taking at least one dose of the vaccine, NaCOVERC said.
