Nasser Bourit, Morocco’s Foreign Minister has called on both the head of the High Council of State Khalid al-Mishri in Tripoli and the speaker of Libya’s parliament in the east, Aguila Saleh. This is a part of Morocco’s efforts to resolve the political crisis in Libya. Libya has been undergoing a political crisis following the assassination of Colonel Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi in the 2011.
Morocco has been involved in discussions with Libya’s transition government at different points of time. Those discussions were mainly about appointment of Libya’s central bank governor and the heads of the electoral commission, the anti-corruption commission and filling up judges in the Supreme Court.
Aguila Saleh, the speaker of Libya’s parliament, at the meeting said that Libya with the formation of a presidential council had won the confidence of the House of Representatives. This, he remarked, augured well for the country to progress towards a successful democracy.
Khaled el-Mechri, said that Libya was moving towards holding parliamentary and presidential elections at the end of this year. Importantly, Germany will host a new set of peace talks later this month in capital Berlin with Libya’s transitional government to launch the reconstruction works of the country. Libya’s infrastructure is ravaged by decade long turbulence.
