France has called off its joint military operations with Malian forces citing the happening of the second coup  during  the last nine months in the country. The suspension would continue, French sources said, till Mali restores civilian rule.

The French military has been supporting soldiers from Mali, Chad, Mauritania, Niger and Burkina Faso through its over 5, 000 troops present in the region to counter extremists in the vulnerable Sahel area.  Recently, Goita orchestrated the ouster of president Bah Ndaw and prime minister Moctar Ouane.  This had raised doubts about his commitment to holding the elections in time. Ecowas and the African Union (AU) suspended Mali from their institutions as a retaliation to the second coup.

The French sources, however, clarified that suspension of the joint military operations is temporary, French soldiers will continue to operate there independently.
