Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said recently that over the next five years, aquaculture production of the country would be raised to 24,000 tonnes annually as against 3,000 tonnes achieved in 2020.
Towards achieving the target, the president launched the Small Scale Aquaculture Project (PRODAPE), which would entail a cost of US$ 49 million. The project will be implemented in 23 districts of seven Mozambican provinces namely Tete, Manica, Sofala, Zambezia, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado. The project will generate 17,000 jobs.
The project will benefit aquaculture smallholders, rural businessmen, and university graduates as well as technical experts, who are not only the beneficiaries but also crucial actors for the success of the project. The project is part of structural transformation which reflects the transition from a modest, small-scale activity to business oriented production.
