Somalia is restoring diplomatic relations with Kenya. Qatar played the role of an interlocutor in brokering the peace between the two countries. The diplomatic relations with the two countries came to a naught in December last year when Somalia accused Kenya of interfering in its internal matters.
Now, the two governments agree to keep friendly relations between the two on the basis of principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The two countries also have agreed to non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. Heads of States of both countries, in a statement, thanked the Emir of State of Qatar for using his good offices in sorting out the differences.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta met with Qatar’s envoy for Counterterrorism and Mediation of Conflict Resolution. Similarly, Qatar’s ruler Sheikh Tamim Al Thani held phone talks with Somali President Mohammed Farmajo. There is also dispute between the two countries on maritime boundaries, which is before the International Court of Justice.
