The rising hunger in the African continent is engaging the attention of many organizations. They are forming alliances to fight the hunger together. A recent development was the formation of a tie up among the African Development Bank(AfDB),  the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and the CGIAR System Organization. Together, they will be mobilizing resources to fight hunger in the continent.

The decision was taken at a two-day high-level dialogue that focusedon modernizing food production and how to ensure food safety to 1.3 billion people in the continent.  The group  felt that that the impact of climate change, rising fragility, conflict and locust invasions in east and southern Africa are  affecting the food availability, which may become crucial if left unattended now.

The initiative of the development organizations will work in tandem with the  governments, development partners and the private sector. The meeting held virtually was attended by the government officials, heads of multilateral development banks, development partners, regional organizations, research institutions, business leaders, private sector operators, investment agencies and civil society organizations.

The number of people living with poverty in Africa  increased from 214 million to 246 million between 2015 and 2020. Onslaught on poverty needs focused attention on agriculture and agro-business related activities to provide employment opportunities for millions of young Africans, who account for 70 per cent of the population. Also, to ensure agricultural productivity, it is important to ensure adoption of appropriate technologies and sharing of agricultural practices, the group felt.
