The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has allegedly failed to pay former employees their severance packages on time. According to the former employees and the union leaders, the severance packages were set to be paid earlier this year. The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) now is planning to take the matter to the CCMA. However,  SABC has a different take. It said that the retrenchment packages are being paid and most employees have already been paid.

It further said that it has met all its obligations. Presently, it is embarked on an infrastructure renewal program and is making significant investment in fresh and compelling content. It also claimed that the corporation could recover ground lost as a result of the pandemic and the state of disaster.

The revenue generation in SABC is back at levels of a year ago, and showing strong growth. Over 600 employees were retrenched at the end of March as part of the national broadcaster’s turnaround plan. Close to 275 of these employees were found redundant.  Some employees – 346 of them-  opted for voluntary severance packages.
