COVID Vaccination- Rural Africa faces the risk of being left behind

  • A recent study from a group of Nigerian and British researchers points out that rural Africa risks being left behind in the pandemic because of the lack of health care amenities for vaccination like cold-chain environments, good road networks, trained staff, clinics and hospitals.
  •  About 59% of the continent’s population lives in rural areas.

As of April 1, Africa’s confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 reached  4,215,600 with reported deaths of 112,759 and  3,796,312 recoveries. The total vaccinations administered across the continent are around 6,533,459.Vaccinations. South Africa remains the continent’s epicenter for the Pandemic with more than 1.5 million confirmed cases and 52,000 deaths. The  other most infected countries include are Morocco ( 496,097 ), Tunisia ( 254,018 ), Ethiopia ( 206,589 ), Egypt ( 202,131 ) and Nigeria ( 162,891 ).

Africa’s megacities will bear the burden of the coronavirus pandemic. But about 59% of the continent’s population lives in rural areas.  The impact of the pandemic is felt in rural not in death rates but in economic and social devastation.
